Pantone has announced its Color of the Year for 2021. That color will now trickle down to what consumers see, and influence what they purchase from clothes to home decor. This year, for the second time in the company’s history, Pantone announced two colors.  Pantone selected a bright yellow they named Illuminating (13-0647), and a neutral gray titled Ultimate Gray (17-5104).

Crescent has matches for these colors starting with Crescent Select colors Summer 9518, and Cloudburst 9634.  Both of these matboards colors come in the standard 32×40” size and in the larger 40×60” size. In Crescent’s Decorative Matboard line the matches are 902 Yellow (Also in WC SRM902) and 976 Bar Harbor Gray (Also in WC SRM976).  In contract matting Berkshire matches are B110 Buttercup (Also in WC BW110) and B802 Mid Gray (Also in WC BW802).

Laurie Pressman, Pantone Color Institute vice-president stated that the two colors chosen as Pantone Color of the Year are a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.  Each color possesses positive qualities on its own. Ultimate Gray evokes feelings of dependability, resilience and wisdom.  Illuminating yellow is symbolic of light, energy and heightened awareness and intuition.

Pantone is not the only leading color influencer to target a yellow for 2021.  Benjamin Moore selected two shades of yellow in their 2021 color trends palette.

“Yellow is a sunny interior design color, and yellow mats are a great way of bringing this color into your home without having to paint your walls,” says Angela Gomez, Product Manager for Crescent.   “The color Yellow is associated with warm and happy things in life. Our Summer 9518 matboard works wonderfully  with children’s art and looks great in any kids room. Adding this shade of yellow in a matted and framed work of art or photo creates an instant sense of warmth and coziness. However, if a yellow or gray mat would be too much because the artwork has these colors dominant in them, a white mat might be more suitable.  I recommend our new Winter White 1188. This is the whitest white and makes those yellows and grays really pop.”

Cool gray tempers yellow to create a nuanced, balanced palette.  When paired, the two hues selected as Pantone Color of the Year create contrast in the most beautiful way. While this color combination is popular, a unique application ensures a room’s design is anything but ordinary.

Each color possesses positive qualities on its own. The Cloudburst Gray evokes feelings of dependability, resilience and wisdom. Summer yellow is symbolic of light, energy and heightened awareness and intuition.  The gray qualities, however, need the yellow qualities and vice versa, for a perfect pairing color experts say. They work amazingly well in both contemporary and classic settings.
